How can odors from waste transfer stations be controlled? A case study of the spray‑based deodorization system at the Tangbu Waste Transfer Station operated by Guangzhou City Investment Group.

Deodorizing spray system

Aogong Technical Department

Aogong Spray has developed a smart micro‑fog deodorization system tailored for the Tangbu centralized waste collection site of Guangzhou City Investment. Officially installed, commissioned, and put into operation in 2025, the system effectively addresses the nuisance caused by malodorous emissions from waste storage and transfer operations, providing a standardized solution for odor control at township sanitation facilities.

The Tanbu centralized waste collection point handles the collection, compression, and transfer of household waste for the entire area. The facility features a semi‑open design; during the summer’s high temperatures, food waste ferments rapidly, continuously emitting malodorous gases such as hydrogen sulfide and ammonia. Conventional manual spraying of chemical agents can only provide temporary odor masking, leading to frequent odor re‑emergence. This not only jeopardizes the health of frontline workers but has also repeatedly triggered complaints from nearby residents.

Based on the layout of the Tanbu site—including its unloading area, waste‑storage zone, and compaction station—the Aogong team developed a customized zoning‑based atomization solution. They installed stainless‑steel, high‑pressure, corrosion‑resistant piping along the ceiling and deployed core atomization terminals—UFO oxygen‑enriched ion spray discs—at locations where odors are most prevalent. When in operation, these spray discs simultaneously generate large quantities of negative oxygen ions and highly reactive oxygen‑rich molecules, achieving dual purification of the air environment: first, ultrafine water mist encapsulates malodorous compounds, dissolving and adsorbing ammonia, sulfides, and other odor‑causing pollutants; second, the oxygen‑rich ions possess strong oxidative activity, directly oxidizing and breaking down odor‑producing molecules, thereby disrupting their molecular structure and preventing secondary volatilization. Compared with conventional atomizing nozzles, this system delivers twice the deodorization efficiency.

Meanwhile, the UFO oxygen‑enriched ion spray disc features an integrated, anti‑clogging disc design that delivers uniform water output and produces fine, stable mist. It continuously generates ultrafine droplets measuring 5–10 microns, which, when combined with a plant‑based deodorizing solution, evenly permeate the entire area. This multi‑action approach breaks down malodorous molecules at their source, while the rapid evaporation of the mist prevents puddling and avoids corrosion of waste‑handling equipment and compaction machinery.

The complete deodorization system is equipped with an intelligent PLC‑based automatic control system, supporting timed cyclic misting and odor‑concentration‑sensing start/stop functionality. It can automatically adjust the misting frequency during peak morning and evening waste‑transfer periods, provides automatic alerts for low water or medication levels, and enables remote monitoring of the system’s operating status.

Since the deodorization system was commissioned, the site has achieved an odor removal rate exceeding 90%, and the pungent, unpleasant odors within the facility have been significantly reduced. Oxygen‑enriched ion technology continuously purifies the air inside the station, markedly alleviating respiratory discomfort, stuffiness, and nasal irritation among operators. Odor concentrations at the site boundary now consistently meet regulatory standards, and complaints from nearby residents regarding offensive smells have been eliminated. Compared with conventional spray systems, the micro‑mist system equipped with UFO oxygen‑enriched ion spray discs delivers water and energy savings of more than 40% while substantially reducing chemical consumption.

The successful implementation of this project fully demonstrates the suitability of Aogong’s micro‑mist deodorization system for urban and rural sanitation waste‑handling facilities. Leveraging its dual advantages of oxygen‑enriched ion purification, precision atomization, and intelligent automated control, the system will continue to provide comprehensive odor‑control solutions for municipal sanitation and solid‑waste‑management projects, thereby supporting the refinement and greening of urban environmental hygiene.
